Australia salary in Indian rupees: four numbers that show if an offer is good
Tips · 2026-11-05 · 8 min read

An Australia salary in Indian rupees is only meaningful once you pick one exchange rate, say which date it comes from and compare like with like. On 16 October 2026 the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) rate was 65.89 rupees per Australian dollar, so the national minimum wage of AUD 26.44 an hour is roughly INR 1,742 an hour. This guide converts the main Australian pay benchmarks at that one rate and shows what a fair comparison with an Indian salary should include.
Which exchange rate to use for an Australia salary in rupees
The Reserve Bank of India publishes reference rates for the US dollar, pound, euro, yen, UAE dirham and Indonesian rupiah only. It does not publish one for the Australian dollar, so there is no Indian official rate to quote. The RBA's exchange rate table does list rupees per Australian dollar, and that is the rate used throughout this post.
Every rupee figure below is a rough comparison at the rate published on 16 October 2026. Rates change daily, so repeat the sum with the current rate before you judge a real offer.
Australian pay benchmarks converted into INR
The table lists the official Australian figures first and the rupee equivalent beside each. They are floors and reference points, not typical salaries for any trade or profession.
| Benchmark | In AUD | Rough INR at 65.89 |
|---|---|---|
| National Minimum Wage, per hour | AUD 26.44 | INR 1,742 |
| National Minimum Wage, per 38-hour week | AUD 1004.90 | INR 66,213 |
| Median weekly personal income of India-born people in Australia (2021 Census) | AUD 1,015 | INR 66,878 |
| Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT), a year | AUD 79,423 | INR 5,233,181 |
| 12.00% super guarantee on the CSIT amount | AUD 9,530.76 | INR 627,982 |
The minimum wage applies from 1 July 2026 and is worked out on a week of 38 ordinary hours. The Census figure is older, from 2021, and covers everyone born in India who had income, from students to senior engineers, so treat it as background rather than a target. The Fair Work Ombudsman's minimum wages page keeps the current national figures.
What each number tells you
The minimum wage is a legal floor, not a market rate
Most employees do not have their pay set by the national minimum wage at all. Their minimum is set by the award covering their industry or occupation, and award rates may be higher. The Fair Work Commission raised modern award wage rates by 4.75 per cent from 1 July 2026, so an award rate for a cook or a nurse can sit above the national floor.
If you work in a kitchen, look at what employers advertise for roles such as a Head Chef, Sous Chef or Cook in Melbourne or, for factory and plant roles, browse all manufacturing jobs in Australia, then compare any pay figure with the award for that role.
The CSIT matters only for sponsored roles
The Core Skills Income Threshold is AUD 79,423 for nomination applications lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027. It is the salary test that sits behind employer sponsorship on the Skills in Demand route, and Home Affairs indexes skilled visa thresholds every 1 July. Our planning guide to the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) explains how the visa works, and the Home Affairs salary requirements page has the current amounts.
A sponsored offer that sits close to the threshold is not automatically a good one. It only shows the employer has met the minimum test. For worked examples, see our posts on welder pay in rupees and software engineer pay in INR. Employer Sponsored Jobs also explains the two pay tests a sponsored offer must pass from the employer's side.
Super sits alongside your pay, so ask how the offer is quoted
The general superannuation guarantee rate is 12.00% for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Applied to the CSIT amount that is AUD 9,530.76, or roughly INR 627,982 at the same rate. Before you compare offers, ask whether a quoted figure is the salary on its own or a package that already includes super, because the two are not the same number.
How to compare an Australian offer with your Indian salary
A rupee conversion of the headline figure is where the comparison starts, not where it ends. Run the steps below on every offer.
- Write down the offer in AUD and whether it is hourly, weekly or annual, and whether it includes super.
- Convert it with the RBA rate and note the date, so you can repeat the sum later.
- Check it against the award or the national minimum wage for the hours worked, using 38 ordinary hours as the base week.
- If the role is sponsored, check the annual figure against the CSIT of AUD 79,423.
- Add up what you pay out before you save anything: visa charges, document costs and the first weeks of living costs.
- Compare the result with your Indian take-home pay, not your Indian cost to company.
Step five is where many comparisons go wrong. Our guide to Australia work visa fees in Indian rupees covers the official charges, and the payslip explainer shows where tax and super appear once you start work.
New Zealand pay in rupees
If you are weighing both countries, the same method works. From 1 April 2026 New Zealand's adult minimum wage is NZD 23.95 an hour before tax, or NZD 958 for a 40-hour week. The RBA rate on 16 October 2026 was 1.2285 New Zealand dollars per Australian dollar, so a cross rate through the Australian dollar puts the hourly figure at roughly INR 1,285 and the 40-hour week at roughly INR 51,382. The two weeks are not the same length, 38 ordinary hours in Australia and 40 in this New Zealand figure, so compare hourly rates first.
Common mistakes when converting Australian pay
- Using a bank or app rate. Transfer rates carry a margin. Use the RBA rate for comparing, and your bank's quote only when you send money.
- Comparing annual AUD with monthly INR. Convert both to the same period before you judge the offer.
- Treating the minimum wage as a typical salary. It is the lowest legal rate for most employees, and awards may set higher ones.
- Ignoring hours. A weekly figure is calculated on 38 ordinary hours. If an employer expects more, the extra hours need to be paid under the award or agreement.
- Counting the offer but not the cost of the move. Fees and the first weeks of rent come out before any savings.
- Believing a pay promise that the paperwork does not match. If a message promises a figure without a written contract, treat it with suspicion.
Keep your own evidence strong as well. A CV that shows results for your trade or profession helps you justify asking for pay above the floor, and Build AI CV can help you organise it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Australian minimum wage in Indian rupees?
From 1 July 2026 the National Minimum Wage is AUD 26.44 an hour, or AUD 1004.90 for a 38-hour week. At the RBA rate of 65.89 on 16 October 2026 that is roughly INR 1,742 an hour and INR 66,213 a week. The rate moves daily, so re-run the sum before relying on it.
Is AUD 70,000 a good salary in Australia?
It depends on the role, the city, the hours and whether super is included. AUD 70,000 is below the AUD 79,423 Core Skills Income Threshold, so it would not meet the salary test for a sponsored nomination under that threshold. For other roles, check the award rate for the occupation.
Does the RBI publish an AUD to INR rate?
No. The RBI reference rate archive covers the US dollar, pound, euro, yen, UAE dirham and Indonesian rupiah only. For Australian dollars, this guide uses the RBA's published rupee rate and states its date.
Is the minimum wage the same as the pay for my trade?
Not usually. Most employees are covered by an award for their industry or occupation, and award rates may be higher than the National Minimum Wage. Ask the employer which award applies and check the rate before accepting.
Do visa holders get the same pay protections?
Yes. Visa holders and migrant workers have the same workplace rights and protections as other employees in Australia, including pay, leave and final pay. The Fair Work Ombudsman can give information, and the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450 can help you call them in another language.
Key takeaways
- Use one RBA rate, date it, and repeat the sum with the current rate for any real offer.
- At 65.89 rupees per Australian dollar, the national minimum wage is about INR 1,742 an hour.
- The AUD 79,423 CSIT is about INR 5,233,181 a year and matters for sponsored roles only.
- Awards may pay more than the national minimum, so check the award for your trade.
- Compare take-home pay with take-home pay, and count the cost of moving before you decide.
