Welder salary in Australia in rupees: the ₹52.3 lakh floor to check in any 482 offer

Tips · 2026-10-29 · 10 min read

An Indian welder lifts his helmet to inspect a steel joint in an Australian fabrication workshop.

A welder sponsored for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) under the Core Skills stream must be paid at least AUD79,423 a year, which is roughly ₹52.3 lakh at the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of 16 October 2026. The award minimum at trade level is far lower, about AUD 58,193 a year, or roughly ₹38.3 lakh. The same sponsorship floor applies to electricians and carpenters, but for electricians the licence timeline decides when the full rate really starts.

Why one rupee figure is never enough

The Reserve Bank of India publishes reference rates for a short list of currencies, and the Australian dollar is not one of them. So every conversion in this article uses the Reserve Bank of Australia exchange rate of 16 October 2026: 65.89 Indian rupees per Australian dollar.

Treat each rupee number as a rough comparison at that published rate. Rates change every day, and your bank's transfer rate will differ again.

Trades are not a small corner of the Indian community in Australia either. In the 2021 Census, Technicians and Trades Workers made up 8.4% of India-born workers in Australia,, so many families in Pune, Ludhiana or Kochi hear these numbers second-hand, which is where most mistakes start.

Three pay floors that sit under every trade job

Australian pay for a tradesperson is shaped by three separate floors. The National Minimum Wage covers everyone. Above it, the award for the industry sets most workers' minimum, and Fair Work explains that award rates may be higher than the National Minimum Wage. For a sponsored worker, a third floor sits on top: the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT).

Pay floor (from 1 July 2026)Weekly (AUD)Yearly (AUD)Yearly, roughly in INR
National Minimum Wage$1004.90about 52,255₹34.4 lakh
Manufacturing Award, C10/V5 (trade) level$1119.10about 58,193₹38.3 lakh
Building and Construction Award, Level 3 (CW/ECW 3)$1154.40about 60,029₹39.6 lakh
Core Skills Income Threshold (sponsored 482 nominations)about 1,52779,423₹52.3 lakh

The weekly award and minimum wage figures are based on a 38-hour week, and under the National Employment Standards the maximum is 38 hours a week unless the employer asks for reasonable extra hours. The yearly amounts are the weekly rate over a full year.

These rates are not frozen. In its Annual Wage Review 2026 decision of 2 June 2026, the Fair Work Commission raised modern award wages by 4.75 per cent from 1 July 2026. The CSIT is also indexed each year from 1 July: it was AUD76,515 for nominations lodged in 2025-26 and is AUD79,423 for those lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.

Welders: where the award ends and the sponsorship floor begins

If a welding job falls under the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award at its trade level (C10/V5), the minimum is $29.45 an hour, or about ₹1,940 an hour at the 16 October rate.

A sponsored offer cannot stop there. Home Affairs' salary requirements for nominations put the Core Skills floor at AUD79,423, and the salary must also match the Annual Market Salary Rate for the occupation. The gap between the award trade minimum and the CSIT is about AUD 21,230 a year, roughly ₹14 lakh. That gap is why a "sponsored welder" offer at award pay is a warning sign, not a bargain.

We looked at the same gap from the factory floor in which factory roles can be sponsored and which cannot, and at long-term demand in our outlook for a welding career in Australia. To see how an actual listing reads, compare the duties and pay in a live fabricator and welder job in Perth, or browse sponsored manufacturing jobs.

Electricians: the licence sets the timetable

For electricians, the sponsorship floor is the same AUD79,423, but two extra steps sit between the offer and the full role. First, Trades Recognition Australia's Temporary Skills Shortage skills assessment is compulsory for a 482 visa as an Electrician (General) or Electrician (Special Class), with the outcome about 9 weeks after complete evidence is submitted. For permanent migration, TRA's Offshore Skills Assessment Program is compulsory instead, and its outcome comes about 15 weeks after complete evidence.

Second, TRA does not award Australian qualifications or occupational licences. Each state runs its own licence:

  • New South Wales does not recognise overseas qualifications for contractor licences or certificates. An Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) through OSAP is the start, followed by Australian context gap training and supervised employment.
  • Victoria: Energy Safe Victoria does not assess overseas qualifications. With an OTSR you can get a Supervised Worker's Licence, then complete gap training (Certificate III Electrotechnology Electrician) and the Licensed Electrician's Assessment.
  • Queensland: an OTSR holder gets an electrical work training permit and must finish minimum gap training with an RTO before getting the licence.

So when you compare an electrician's offer from Australia with your pay in India, ask the employer what you will do, and under whose supervision, until the licence is issued. If you want an Australian qualification to show for your trade, RPLDirect explains how recognition of prior learning works in Australia. Our guide to career pathways for electrical and energy trades covers where the demand sits.

Carpenters and building trades: read the classification, not the job title

Building work is often covered by the Building and Construction General On-site Award. Its Level 3 (CW/ECW 3), which includes the engineering construction tradesperson level 1, has a minimum of $1154.40 a week or $30.38 an hour, about ₹2,002 an hour at the 16 October rate. Which level applies to a carpenter depends on the award and the duties, so check the classification named in the contract rather than the job title in a WhatsApp message.

From gross pay to what you keep

A salary of AUD79,423 is not what lands in your account. Here is a rough picture for one year at the CSIT, before any deductions your own situation adds:

  • Income tax, if the ATO treats you as an Australian resident for tax: the 2026-27 resident rates give about AUD 14,347, plus the Medicare levy of 2%, about AUD 1,588. That leaves about AUD 63,488, roughly ₹41.8 lakh.
  • Income tax as a foreign resident for tax: the latest rates the ATO page shows (2025-26) charge 30c for each dollar up to $135,000, about AUD 23,827 on this salary, with no Medicare levy.
  • Superannuation: the super guarantee rate is 12.00% for 2026-27, about AUD 9,531 on this salary, roughly ₹6.3 lakh. It goes into a super fund, not into your monthly pay.

The ATO decides your tax residency, so check it first. Then compare take-home pay with take-home pay.

A step-by-step check of any trade offer in rupees

  1. Find the occupation. Look it up on the combined list of eligible skilled occupations.
  2. Match the visa to the floor. For a 482 Core Skills nomination, the salary must reach the market rate and at least AUD79,423. Our planning guide to the Skills in Demand visa sets out the rest of the requirements.
  3. Check the award. Ask which award and classification applies, and compare the hourly rate with Fair Work's minimum.
  4. Convert at a dated rate. Use one published rate and note its date.
  5. Work out take-home pay. Subtract income tax and, for tax residents, the Medicare levy. Keep super separate.
  6. Ask about the licence. For electrical and plumbing work, ask what you will do and earn while the state licence is pending.
  7. Check who pays which cost. The employer pays all costs of becoming a sponsor and nominating you and cannot pass them to you; paying for sponsorship, including through salary deductions, is illegal.

Your CV should make the classification easy to see: list each welding process, the tickets you hold and the years of work in the trade. Build AI CV can help you set out a trade CV the Australian way. Common mistakes Indian tradespeople make with Australian pay figures

  • Treating the award minimum as the sponsored salary. A sponsored Core Skills role must clear AUD79,423 and the market rate, not just the award.
  • Using an undated rupee figure. Last year's threshold at last year's rate can be off by lakhs.
  • Counting super as take-home pay. It is paid into a fund, so leave it out of your monthly budget.
  • Assuming a trade certificate is a licence. TRA assesses skills; the states issue licences, often after gap training and supervised work.
  • Agreeing to salary deductions "for the visa". Paying an employer to sponsor you is illegal and can lead to visa refusal or cancellation, fines or imprisonment.
  • Not checking pay slips. Pay slips must be given within 1 working day of pay day. If something looks wrong, call the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450 and ask them to call the Fair Work Ombudsman on 13 13 94.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum salary for a sponsored welder in Australia in rupees?

In the Core Skills stream of the subclass 482 visa, the salary must be at least the Annual Market Salary Rate for the occupation and no less than AUD79,423 for nominations lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. At the RBA rate of 16 October 2026 that is roughly ₹52.3 lakh a year.

Is award pay the same as the salary a sponsored tradesperson must receive?

No. The award sets the legal minimum for most employees in an industry, for example $1119.10 a week at the Manufacturing Award trade level. A sponsored Core Skills nomination must also clear AUD79,423 a year and match the market rate.

Do electricians from India earn the full rate as soon as they arrive?

Not always. The 482 visa needs a TRA skills assessment for electricians, and each state has its own licence steps, such as a supervised worker licence and gap training in Victoria, so plan for a period of supervised work.

How much tax does a tradesperson pay on AUD79,423?

If the ATO treats you as an Australian resident for tax, the 2026-27 rates come to about AUD 14,347, plus the 2% Medicare levy of about AUD 1,588. Foreign residents for tax pay different rates and no Medicare levy.

Is superannuation part of my take-home pay?

No. Super guarantee is 12.00% for 2026-27 and goes into a superannuation fund, not your bank account. On AUD79,423 it comes to about AUD 9,531, so keep it separate when you compare offers.

Key takeaways

  • A sponsored Core Skills salary must reach at least AUD79,423, roughly ₹52.3 lakh at the RBA rate of 16 October 2026.
  • Award trade minimums are lower: about AUD 58,193 a year at the Manufacturing Award trade level.
  • Electricians need a TRA assessment for the 482 visa and a state licence, which can mean a period of supervised work.
  • Compare take-home pay, after tax and with super kept separate, never gross against gross.
  • Never pay, or accept deductions, for sponsorship.
