Australian payslip explained: what Indian workers should check in the tax, super and leave lines

Tips · 2026-11-02 · 9 min read

An Indian man checks a printed payslip at a sunlit kitchen table beside a laptop and mug.

An Australian payslip is a short document with a lot riding on it: it shows your gross pay, the tax taken out, the super your employer paid in, and how much leave you have built up. If you are coming from India, the layout will look different from what you are used to, so it helps to know each line before your first pay day. This guide walks through the lines, what to compare them against, and the mistakes new arrivals make.

What every payslip should show

Employers usually pay wages into your bank account and give a pay slip showing earnings, tax paid and super contributions. Pay slips must be given within 1 working day of pay day, in electronic or hard copy form. Details are on the Fair Work Ombudsman's pay slips page.

Treat the payslip as a record you can check, not just a receipt. Save every one in a folder on your phone: you may need them for a visa application, a tenancy or a loan later, and they are your evidence if a dispute starts.

Gross pay, award rates and casual loading

Most employees' minimum wage is set by the award covering their industry or occupation, and award rates may be higher than the National Minimum Wage. So the first check is whether your hourly rate or salary matches your offer and sits at or above the award. Chefs, nurses, tradespeople and office staff are usually covered by different awards.

The same check applies when you are weighing an offer for a skilled job. Our welder salary post shows how to test an offer against an official floor before you accept it.

If you are a casual employee, the casual loading for award/agreement free employees is 25 per cent, as set in the National Minimum Wage Order 2026. Casual loading replaces paid leave, so a higher hourly rate is not a bonus: it pays for the entitlements you do not receive.

Tax withheld on your payslip

Your employer sends tax to the ATO on your behalf each pay period. To be paid correctly you need a tax file number (TFN). Temporary visitors in Australia with a valid work rights visa can apply for a TFN online through the ATO's Individual Auto-Registration system; it is free and the TFN should arrive within 28 days.

The ATO's resident tax rates for 2026-27 are below. They do not include the Medicare levy of 2%.

Taxable incomeTax on that income
Up to $18,200Nil
Over $18,200 up to $45,00015c for each $1 over $18,200
Over $45,000 up to $135,000$4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
Over $135,000 up to $190,000$31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
Over $190,000$51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

Not everyone is taxed as a resident. Foreign residents for tax purposes are not required to pay the Medicare levy, but they use a separate rate table, and working holiday makers have their own table too. Which one applies to you depends on your circumstances, so read the ATO's tax rates for Australian residents and the related foreign resident page before judging whether the tax line looks right.

Superannuation: the line with no Indian equivalent to copy

Super is retirement saving paid by your employer into a fund, separate from your take-home pay. The general employer super rate is 12.00% for the period 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, as published on the ATO's page on super rates.

If you have only seen Indian payslips, do not assume the same rules carry over: the two systems are separate. Check your payslip for a super line, then check that the amount reached your fund, using your fund's online account.

When you leave, some temporary residents can claim the money back. A departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP) can be claimed when the super was built up on a temporary resident visa (not subclass 405 or 410), the visa has ceased, the person has left Australia with no other active Australian visa, and they are neither an Australian nor a New Zealand citizen, and not an Australian permanent resident. A DASP cannot be claimed until after leaving Australia, but the ATO recommends starting the application before you leave.

DASP tax rates are 35% on the taxed element and 45% on the untaxed element, with nil on the tax-free component, and 65% on both elements for working holiday makers. That is a large deduction, so it is worth knowing before you plan to cash out.

Leave and hours you should see

The National Employment Standards (NES) are the minimum entitlements for all employees in the national workplace relations system, and an award, contract or agreement cannot provide less. Three of them matter on your payslip:

  • Full-time and part-time employees get 4 weeks of paid annual leave a year; casual employees do not.
  • Paid sick and carer's leave is 10 days a year for full-time employees and pro-rata for part-time employees; casual employees get 2 days of unpaid carer's leave per occasion.
  • An employee can work a maximum of 38 hours in a week unless the employer asks them to work reasonable extra hours.

If you recently arrived and your payslip shows no leave balance, ask whether you are classed as casual. That is the most common reason, and it is a question to ask in writing, not a reason for alarm.

Check your first payslip in five steps

  1. Open the payslip within a day of pay day and save a copy outside the employer's system.
  2. Match the hours and rate to your roster and your contract.
  3. Look at gross pay, tax withheld and take-home pay, and make sure the three agree.
  4. Find the super line and confirm the contribution appears in your fund account.
  5. Check your leave balances against whether you are full-time, part-time or casual.

The same habits belong in your first weeks in the country. Our 30-day plan for Indian professionals covers the other tasks around banking, tax numbers and settling in, and JobFinder's first job in Australia or New Zealand guide looks at the same payslip basics from another angle.

Common mistakes

  • Not asking for a payslip. Employers must give one, and without it you cannot prove what you were paid.
  • Treating casual loading as extra income. It stands in for paid leave, so budget for unpaid time off.
  • Assuming Indian provident fund rules apply to super. The two schemes are separate, so read the ATO pages.
  • Judging the offer by gross pay alone. Tax and the question of whether the stated salary includes super change what reaches your bank account. Our work visa fee post is a reminder that the headline number is only part of the picture.
  • Waiting to fix errors. Raise a wrong rate or missing super early, in writing.

Frequently asked questions

How soon must my employer give me a payslip?

Pay slips must be given within 1 working day of pay day, in electronic or hard copy form. If you are not getting them, ask your payroll contact first and keep your own records of the hours you worked.

Is superannuation the same as the provident fund I know from India?

Both are retirement savings built up through work, but the rules are set by each country and differ. In Australia the general employer super rate is 12.00% for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, paid by your employer into a super fund. Read the ATO page rather than assuming the Indian rules apply.

Do casual employees get annual leave in Australia?

Full-time and part-time employees get 4 weeks of paid annual leave a year, but casual employees do not get paid annual leave. Casual staff under an award-free arrangement receive a casual loading of 25 per cent instead, so check which category your contract puts you in.

Can I get my super back when I leave Australia?

Some temporary visa holders can claim a departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP) once the visa has ceased and they have left Australia. You cannot claim until after you leave, although the ATO recommends starting the application before you go. Tax is taken from the payment at the rates the ATO publishes.

What if the hours or pay on my payslip look wrong?

Compare the payslip with your contract, your roster and the award that covers your industry. Raise it politely with your employer in writing first, and if it is not fixed, the Fair Work Ombudsman's pages explain what help is available to employees.

Key takeaways

  • Your employer must give you a pay slip within 1 working day of pay day.
  • Check hours, rate, tax withheld and super on every payslip, not just the take-home figure.
  • The general employer super rate is 12.00% for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, paid into a fund.
  • Casual employees get a loading of 25 per cent instead of paid annual leave.
  • Keep every payslip: you may need them for visas, loans and any pay dispute.
