Gulf experience CV for Australia: will your years in Dubai or Riyadh count?

Tips · 2026-11-07 · 9 min read

A relieved Indian tradesman in a hi-vis vest holds up an open folder of blank papers beside a laptop.

Your Gulf experience CV for Australia has one job: turn years of contract work in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha or Muscat into evidence that an employer, a sponsor and, where needed, a skills assessor can check. MEA says most Indian workers who go to the Gulf are temporary migrants who return home when their contracts end, so the paperwork you keep from each contract matters as much as the job titles you list.

This guide shows how to present those years, which documents to collect now and which official pages to check before you rely on any of it. It is general information, not personal advice.

Why Gulf years need proof, not just a line on the CV

For employer-sponsored work, the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) asks for at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work must add up to at least 12 months full-time. Our planning guide to the 482 visa explains how that fits the wider process.

Some primary 482 applicants must also hold a mandatory skills assessment, by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) or VETASSESS depending on the occupation, and it must be started before the visa application is lodged. For permanent employer-nominated routes the experience bar is higher: the subclass 186 Direct Entry stream asks for at least 3 years of relevant experience and a positive skills assessment unless exempt.

That is why a Gulf contract described only as "worked as technician, 2019 to 2023" is weak. A reader cannot tell what you did, where, or how anyone could confirm it.

How a skills assessor reads your Gulf history

TRA describes its Migration Skills Assessment Program as a documentary-based assessment that compares qualifications and employment history with Australian standards. Read the TRA programme page for the evidence it asks for. TRA also says plainly that it does not award Australian qualifications, occupational registrations or occupational licences, so an assessment is not a licence to work in a regulated trade.

The same logic applies to other assessing bodies. For IT roles, the Australian Computer Society lists a Recognition of Prior Learning assessment at $625 for people with at least 6 years of experience and a General Skills assessment at $1,498. For engineers, Engineers Australia's standard Competency Demonstration Report assessment costs $940 excluding GST. Fees and evidence rules change, so confirm each on the assessor's own site before you plan around them.

What to put on the CV, role by role

Write each Gulf contract as its own entry, then add the detail that lets a stranger verify and picture the work:

  • Job title and employer type. Use the title on your contract or experience letter, and describe the employer in a few neutral words such as "contractor on a commercial building project".
  • Dates by month. Use start and end months that match your contract and visa stamps. Gaps and overlaps are the first thing a reader questions.
  • Project and scope. Name the type of site, the equipment you ran and the standards you worked to, in plain English.
  • Tickets and licences. List each one with the issuing body, because a Gulf licence is not an Australian licence and a reader needs to see the difference.
  • Results. Give measurable outcomes only where you can prove them, such as shutdowns completed on schedule or a team you supervised.

Drop vague phrases such as "hard-working" and "team player". If you want a layout that suits Australian employers, our post on the Australian resume format for Indians covers what to remove and what to lead with. A CV builder such as Build AI CV can help you structure the entries, but the facts must come from your own records.

The documents behind each entry

A good CV is only the front page. Collect the evidence for every Gulf contract before you apply, because employers and assessors may ask for it months later, when a former site manager is hard to reach.

Apostille, translation and police certificates

India has been a member of the Hague Apostille Convention since 2005, and the convention entered into force for Australia on 16 March 1995 and for New Zealand on 22 November 2001. MEA says it apostilles personal documents such as birth and marriage certificates and educational documents such as degrees and diplomas, after the designated State, Union Territory or Chambers of Commerce authority has authenticated them. See the MEA apostille page for the current process. We have not found MEA guidance on apostilling an employer's experience letter, so ask the assessor or the sponsor what they accept instead of assuming. Our post on PCC and apostille costs in India shows how the fees add up.

Any document that is not in English must be translated into English, and Home Affairs asks for both the original and the translation. Translators outside Australia do not need to be accredited, but must include their name, address, phone number and language qualifications.

Gulf years can also affect your police certificates. Home Affairs may ask for a certificate from every country you lived in for at least 12 months in the past 10 years, usually if you are over 17. Certificates must cover the time from age 16 up to the issue date, or the whole time in that country, and are valid for 12 months from issue. The Home Affairs character page sets out the rules.

Five steps to build your Gulf evidence file

  1. List every Gulf contract with exact start and end months, then match them against your passport stamps and contracts.
  2. Request a signed experience letter from each employer that lists your duties, and do it now rather than after you get an offer.
  3. Scan payslips, bank statements, tickets and licences into one folder per contract, named by employer type and year.
  4. Check your occupation on the Home Affairs skills assessment page to see whether an assessment is needed and which body handles it.
  5. Write the CV from the folder, not from memory, then compare it with live roles in categories such as manufacturing jobs to see which duties employers ask for.

Common mistakes with Gulf experience on an Australian CV

  • Listing a title with no duties. A reader cannot compare "supervisor" in one country with the same word in another.
  • Dates that disagree. A CV that says 2021 to 2024 while the letter says 2022 to 2024 creates doubt about everything else.
  • Treating a Gulf licence as an Australian one. TRA does not award occupational licences, and regulated trades have their own routes.
  • Waiting for the offer to ask for letters. A former employer may be slow to answer once you have left the country.
  • Paying anyone to produce papers. Fake experience letters can end an application. For genuine help, the post on ECR passports and Australia jobs explains what emigration rules do and do not cover.

A note on ECR rules

MEA's list of 19 ECR countries includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, but not Australia or New Zealand. That means the emigration clearance MEA describes applies to jobs in the listed countries, not to a job in Australia or New Zealand. Check your own passport category and the current MEA overview if you are unsure.

Others who came back from the Gulf are also working through this. The posts by JobsAbroad Bangladesh and pitarata look at the same problem for Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan workers, and the details differ by country. For India, our piece on Gulf return jobs in Australia looks at what changes when you move.

Frequently asked questions

Does Gulf work experience count towards an Australian visa?

It can count as relevant experience if it is in the nominated occupation or a related field and you can prove it. The 482 asks for at least 1 year within the last 5 years, so the dates and duties on your documents matter. The department decides each case.

Do I need a skills assessment for my Gulf experience?

Only some occupations and visas require one. Home Affairs says some primary 482 applicants need a mandatory assessment by TRA or VETASSESS, and the assessment must be started before the visa application is lodged. Check your occupation on the Home Affairs skills assessment page.

What should an experience letter from a Gulf employer contain?

Ask for a signed letter on company letterhead with your job title, exact start and end dates and a list of duties. We have no official checklist for the letter, so confirm with your assessor or sponsor what they accept. Keep a copy of your contract and payslips as backup.

Do I need an apostille for Gulf documents?

MEA apostilles personal and educational documents after state or chamber authentication, and Australia and New Zealand accept apostilles as Hague members. For employer letters, we found no MEA guidance, so ask the receiving body whether it needs anything beyond a signed original.

Will I need police certificates from the Gulf country?

Possibly. Home Affairs may ask for a certificate from each country where you lived for at least 12 months in the past 10 years. Start early, because certificates are valid for 12 months from issue and must cover the whole time in that country.

Key takeaways

  • Write each Gulf contract as its own CV entry with month-level dates, duties and tickets.
  • The 482 asks for at least 1 year of relevant experience in the last 5 years, so proof of dates matters.
  • Collect letters, contracts and payslips before you have an offer, not after.
  • A skills assessment compares evidence with Australian standards, and it does not award a licence.
  • Check apostille, translation and police certificate rules on the official pages linked above.
