Engineering jobs in Australia for Indian engineers are won on recognition, not on the degree title alone. Before an employer can sponsor you, or before you can apply for a points-tested visa, your occupation has to sit on an Australian list, your skills usually have to be checked by the assessing authority that list names, and your Indian documents have to be in a form Australian decision-makers accept. Get those three things in order early and every application you send is stronger.

How sponsored engineering roles work

Most engineers who move with a job offer do so on the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482). It is a temporary visa that lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker for a position it cannot fill with a suitably skilled Australian. The visa is tied to that employer and to the occupation you were nominated for.

In the Core Skills stream, your occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), and the employer must pay you the Annual Market Salary Rate for the role and no less than the Core Skills Income Threshold. For nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027, that threshold is AUD79,423. As a rough comparison only, that is about INR 52.3 lakh a year at the Reserve Bank of Australia rate of 65.89 rupees per Australian dollar published on 16 Oct 2026; exchange rates change daily.

You also need at least 1 year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field, gained within the last 5 years. Part-time or casual work counts if it adds up to at least 12 months full-time. Our Skills in Demand (482) planning guide for Indian professionals covers the streams, fees and family rules in full.

Step one: find your exact occupation and its assessing authority

Australia does not assess "engineers" in general. It works with specific occupations, and the combined list of eligible skilled occupations shows whether each one is on the CSOL, the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, the Short-term Skilled Occupation List or the Regional Occupation List. The same entry names the skills assessing authority for that occupation.

A civil engineer, a structural engineer and a mechanical engineer can be different entries. Choose the one that matches what you actually do each day, not the designation on your appointment letter. Our article on why duties count more than designations in Australian skilled migration shows how to describe your work so it maps cleanly to one occupation.

The same principle applies to your job applications: our guide to the Australian resume format for Indian professionals shows how to describe duties and results so they line up with your experience letters.

What a skills assessment is, and when it is required

A skills assessing authority checks that your skills meet the standard it sets for the occupation, and the Home Affairs skills assessment page confirms that only an assessment from the relevant authority is accepted. An assessment with no validity period printed on it is valid for 3 years from the date of issue.

For the 482, a mandatory skills assessment applies only to some primary applicants, and it is done by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS depending on the occupation. Where it applies, it must be started before the visa application is lodged, or the application is not valid. Permanent routes are stricter: the subclass 186 Direct Entry stream needs a positive assessment before lodging (unless exempt), and the points-tested 189, 190 and 491 visas need a suitable assessment by the time you are invited. pitarata.lk's guide on why a late skills assessment can make a 482 application invalid walks through that timing rule for Sri Lankan applicants, and the logic is the same for you.

Engineers Australia's assessment charges

If the list names Engineers Australia as the authority for your occupation, its standard Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) assessment costs $940 excluding GST, and a fast-track option adds $360 excluding GST. As a rough comparison at the same RBA rate of 16 Oct 2026, the standard CDR fee is about INR 61,940 before GST. A separate Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord qualification assessment costs $505 excluding GST, for degrees covered by those accords. Confirm which assessment fits your degree before you pay.

Which route asks for what

The right route depends on your age, experience and whether an employer is involved. The table compares the main options.

RouteEmployer neededExperience and ageSkills assessment
Skills in Demand (subclass 482), Core Skills streamYes, a sponsoring employer nominates youAt least 1 year in the last 5 yearsOnly for some occupations; started before lodging
Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186), Direct EntryYes, for a CSOL occupationAt least 3 years relevant experience; under 45 unless exemptPositive assessment before lodging, unless exempt
Skilled Independent (subclass 189)NoAt least 65 points on the points test; under 45 when invitedSuitable assessment by the time of invitation
MATES stream (subclass 403)NoRecent graduates aged 18 to 30Not one of the published MATES criteria; ballot selection comes first
New Zealand Accredited Employer Work VisaYes, an accredited employer2 years or more, or a level 4 or higher NZQCF qualification in the same fieldExperience or qualification shown with the application

If you already hold a 482, your employer may later be able to sponsor you for permanent residence through the subclass 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream, which usually needs at least 2 years of full-time work in eligible sponsored employment. A skills assessment is not required at the time of application for that stream.

MATES: the door for recent engineering graduates

If you graduated recently from a top-ranked institution, the MATES stream of the Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403) may suit you better than waiting for a sponsor. It lets Indian graduates and early career professionals live and work in Australia for up to 2 years, and any kind of work is allowed, so you are not tied to one employer.

The rules are narrow. You need a valid Indian passport, an age of 18 to 30 inclusive, and a bachelor degree or higher from a Top 100 institution on the NIRF India Rankings Overall 2024 List, obtained within two years of the start of the ballot registration period. The qualification must relate to engineering, mining, renewable energy, information communications technology, artificial intelligence, financial technology or agricultural technology. An IELTS result needs at least 6.0 overall with at least 5 in each component.

Selection is by ballot: up to 3,000 places for primary applicants per program year, with an AUD25 registration fee, and the visa itself costs from AUD470.00. The 2025-2026 registration window is closed. Our guides on which Indian graduates qualify for the MATES visa and what to have ready before MATES ballot registration opens cover the detail.

Preparing your Indian documents

Start these while you are still job hunting, because some take weeks.

  • Degree and transcripts. MEA apostilles educational documents such as degrees and diplomas once they have first been authenticated by the designated State Government, Union Territory or Chambers of Commerce authority. MEA charges Rs 50 per apostille sticker; the MEA apostille page explains the process.
  • Translations. Any document not in English must be translated, and you provide both the original and the translation.
  • Police Clearance Certificate. You apply at a Passport Seva Kendra or Mini PSK, and the fee in India is Rs. 750 from 1 July 2026. Australian police certificates are valid for 12 months from issue, so time the PCC for when you are close to lodging.

A step-by-step plan for Indian engineers

  1. Find your occupation on the combined list and note which list it is on and its assessing authority.
  2. Write a duty-by-duty record of your engineering experience, with dates, for every employer in the last 5 years.
  3. Start the skills assessment that fits your occupation and your degree, and keep the reference number.
  4. Book an accepted English test at a test centre. For the 482, the IELTS minimum is 5.0 in each of listening, reading, writing and speaking, and the PTE Academic minimum is Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29 and Speaking 24 (tests taken on or after 13 September 2025). PractiseNow's IELTS and PTE practice helps you find your weak section before test day.
  5. Rewrite your CV the Australian way: projects, standards, software and outcomes per role, not a list of designations. Build AI CV can turn your Indian résumé into a clear Australian-format CV.
  6. Apply to sponsored roles that match your nominated occupation, and check each requirement before you send anything.
  7. Get your apostilled degree, translations and PCC ready so the visa can be lodged soon after an offer.

Engineering roles open now

Sponsored engineering vacancies appear at graduate and senior levels. On MigrateJobs right now you can see an undergraduate civil/structural engineer role in Sydney and a mining engineer (medium term planning) role in Brisbane.

Common mistakes Indian engineers make

  • Choosing the occupation from a job title. A "Senior Engineer" designation tells an assessor little; your described duties decide the occupation.
  • Waiting for an offer before starting the assessment. Where a 482 assessment is mandatory, a late start can make the application invalid.
  • Apostilling an unauthenticated degree. MEA apostilles only after the state or other designated authority has authenticated the document.
  • Getting the PCC too early. It is treated as valid for 12 months, so an early certificate can expire before you lodge.
  • Paying for sponsorship. Applicants must not have asked for, offered, received or provided a benefit for sponsorship in the past 3 years; anyone selling a "sponsored job" is putting your visa at risk.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indian engineers need a skills assessment for a 482 visa?

Only some primary 482 applicants need a mandatory skills assessment, done by Trades Recognition Australia or VETASSESS depending on the occupation. Where it applies, it must be started before lodging. Permanent routes such as the 186 Direct Entry stream and the 189 visa do need a suitable assessment.

How do I find the assessing authority for civil or mechanical engineering?

Look up your exact occupation in the Home Affairs combined list of eligible skilled occupations. Each entry shows which lists it is on and names its skills assessing authority, and only that authority's assessment is accepted.

How much does an Engineers Australia CDR assessment cost?

The standard Competency Demonstration Report assessment costs $940 excluding GST, with an optional fast-track fee of $360 excluding GST on top.

Can a recent engineering graduate from India work in Australia without a sponsor?

Possibly, through the MATES stream of the subclass 403 visa, if you are 18 to 30, hold a qualifying degree from a NIRF Top 100 Overall 2024 institution in a listed field such as engineering, and are selected in the ballot. It allows up to 2 years of work and study.

Do I need to apostille my engineering degree?

India, Australia and New Zealand are all parties to the Apostille Convention, and MEA says an apostille is accepted in all member countries. Check what your assessing authority and the visa ask for first, and remember that the state authentication step comes before the MEA apostille.

Key takeaways

  • Find your exact occupation and its assessing authority on the official list before anything else.
  • Sponsored 482 engineering roles need 1 year of recent experience and, in the Core Skills stream, at least AUD79,423 in pay.
  • Recent graduates from NIRF Top 100 institutions should check MATES before waiting for a sponsor.
  • Apostille degrees after state authentication, and time the PCC so it is still valid at lodging.
  • No one can sell you sponsorship or a visa; decisions rest with the employer and Home Affairs.
