Indian IT professionals: is your Australian career plan ready for AI-driven redundancies?

For many Indian software engineers, analysts and operations specialists, Australia is a long-term career destination, not a short stint. That makes recent signals from the Australian job market worth studying closely, because they point to which skill sets may hold their value over the next decade.

The signal from employment law

In May 2026, a specialist employment lawyer in Australia said that dealing with office workers made redundant because of AI had become fairly routine for her practice, likely a weekly matter. The roles most affected were in coding, data analytics, copywriting and administration. She said this was not even on lawyers' radar two years before.

She also suggested Australia is probably behind the US in AI adoption and may take a wait-and-see approach, giving it a chance to observe the wider effects there first. That context matters: in the US, white-collar employment fell in 2025, with major staff cuts at some of the largest companies in the world.

Mapping exposure across roles

The four fields named above face different kinds of pressure. A rough way to think about where to invest your development time:

FieldTasks AI can partly take overStrengths worth building
CodingRoutine code and boilerplateArchitecture, code review, security, domain knowledge
Data analyticsStandard reports and data preparationFraming business questions, interpreting results, data governance
AdministrationScheduling, data entry, standard correspondenceProcess improvement, coordination, stakeholder management
CopywritingFirst drafts of standard contentStrategy, editing, brand judgement, subject expertise

This is a planning aid, not a forecast. The point is that roles built around judgement, ownership and context are harder to automate than roles built around repetition.

Policy direction and the long-term outlook

Canberra's National AI Plan aims to help Australia capture AI's opportunities while keeping people safe, and it ties the benefits to AI and digital skills plus genuine consultation with workers. The government has opted for industry expectations rather than a National Artificial Intelligence Act, a choice some lawmakers have criticised. One independent senator agreed that unemployment of 10 per cent was not out of the question if the technology moved too quickly.

On the data side, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations has been tracking entry-level roles and workforce composition since late 2022. Its early analysis has not shown a faster pace of change than usual, though it frames this as observation rather than prediction. Meanwhile, investment continues, including a $25 billion Microsoft commitment to AI infrastructure and skills in Australia announced this year.

A business academic in Sydney added a structural point: office jobs have grown in Australia as manufacturing has shrunk, so a larger share of the workforce may be exposed to automation than people assume.

Building a resilient pathway from India

  • Reposition your English CV. Lead with ownership, outcomes and decisions you made, and show how you use AI tools to deliver more.
  • Get your skills assessment right. Where your occupation needs one, prepare the evidence early and make sure your duties match the occupation you nominate.
  • Plan the English test. If required, sit IELTS or PTE with enough time to retake it.
  • Arrange your PCC. When a police certificate is requested, apply for a Police Clearance Certificate through Passport Seva.
  • Review visa pathways. The Department of Home Affairs lists options for working in Australia.

For Indian professionals seeking jobs in Australia, the takeaway is not to step back but to aim higher up the value chain, where experience and judgement still set candidates apart.
