Workshop Technician

Trade · Papakura, Auckland, New Zealand · Full-Time · $50,000/yr

Professionals who want variety rather than a single machine will find real scope for growth in this Workshop Technician role. A verified engineering and metal fabrication employer needs a skilled fitter and CNC machine operator who can be accountable for jobs from start to finish.

Day to day, you will combine CNC work with fitting, assembly and fabrication, while coordinating jobs so production stays accurate, well organised and on time. Strong drawing-reading ability is central: you will translate engineering drawings into a clear plan of what to manufacture, sequence the work and make sure finished items leave the workshop ready to install.

It is an ideal platform for a workshop all-rounder looking to apply their full technical and practical capability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret engineering drawings and job specifications to establish materials, dimensions, tolerances and assembly needs
  • Schedule workshop jobs and balance production priorities
  • Run CNC and general metal fabrication machinery, completing fitting, assembly and fabrication to the required specifications
  • Undertake basic MIG and TIG welding where the work demands it
  • Verify the accuracy of finished components through inspection and measurement, resolving any fabrication issues prior to dispatch
  • Ready fabricated items and materials for on-site installation so that site crews receive the correct components, fasteners and materials
  • Maintain open, effective communication with workshop and site personnel
  • Keep workshop machinery and equipment in good working order
  • Champion safe, organised and efficient workshop practices
  • Uphold high standards of cleanliness, quality and safety
  • Attend installation sites periodically to support fitting work

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Strong grounding in metal fabrication, engineering or workshop operations, with hands-on CNC machinery operation
  • Capability to interpret and work from engineering drawings without close supervision
  • Strong track record in fitting and assembly, and in coordinating or owning workshop jobs
  • Basic MIG and TIG welding skills
  • Precise measuring, excellent attention to detail and strong practical problem-solving
  • A sound grasp of fabrication processes and job sequencing, with the ability to use common fabrication machinery and engineering tools
  • Self-direction in managing priorities, combined with good communication and a collaborative approach
  • A firm commitment to safety, quality and accurate workmanship
  • Experience with CNC laser cutting, tube laser cutting, press brakes, drilling or grinding equipment will be highly regarded
  • Able to commence immediately or near-immediately
  • Employer-supported visa sponsorship may be available for eligible applicants
