Underground Heavy Diesel Fitter

Trade · Sydney NSW, Australia · Full-Time · $59/hr

Skilled heavy machinery mechanics and fitters can step into underground mining in NSW through this opening, applying diagnostic and repair expertise in a demanding sector and continuing to build their capability over the long term.

Candidates should be qualified and able to evidence real practical work on heavy equipment. Experience may come from agricultural machinery, earthmoving, civil construction, quarrying, heavy vehicles or mining. The assessment looks at demonstrated work, such as fault diagnosis, repairs and the safe, efficient maintenance of complex mechanical systems, rather than only at previous employers.

Roles are residential: you live in a regional NSW community and work locally rather than on a FIFO basis. Rosters vary between sites, with options that provide regular time at home.

Key Responsibilities

  • Look after underground loaders, haul trucks, drills and other specialised equipment
  • Maintain and service heavy mobile machinery that runs in demanding operating conditions
  • Carry out preventive maintenance on schedule and in line with site requirements
  • Inspect machinery to detect mechanical issues early and prevent major failures
  • Trace faults across engines, hydraulics, transmissions, drivelines and braking systems
  • Interpret technical manuals, drawings and hydraulic schematics as part of diagnosis
  • Perform mechanical repairs and replace components
  • Undertake major component change-outs, rebuilds and overhauls
  • Attend breakdowns and safely bring equipment back into service
  • Maintain accurate documentation of repairs, servicing, defects and maintenance, and keep supervisors informed of equipment issues and maintenance requirements
  • Conduct pre-start inspections and adhere to site isolation and permit procedures
  • Contribute to a safe maintenance team in a high-risk operating environment

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Heavy-equipment experience from agriculture, earthmoving, civil, quarrying or heavy transport sectors will be considered
  • Recognised trade qualification, such as a Certificate III or an equivalent qualification in Diesel Fitting, Heavy Vehicle Mechanics, Plant Mechanics or Agricultural Mechanics
  • Demonstrated hands-on track record maintaining and repairing heavy machinery, plus the ability to demonstrate a genuine employment history covering relevant mechanical duties
  • Well-developed mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic capability, including working knowledge of engines, hydraulics, transmissions, drivelines and braking systems
  • Exposure to Caterpillar, Sandvik or Epiroc equipment is highly regarded
  • Underground mining experience is beneficial, though not mandatory
  • Current driver's licence held
  • Capacity to work rostered shifts and adapt to residential mining conditions
  • Effective communication within a crew, together with the ability to work independently and follow established safety procedures
  • Readiness to learn new machinery and underground mining practices
  • Further mining, confined space, working at heights or first aid qualifications are advantageous
  • Preparedness to complete pre-employment medical and functional assessments and to meet drug and alcohol testing and National Police Check requirements
  • Capacity to provide supporting evidence for your qualifications and relevant work experience
  • Visa sponsorship is offered to eligible candidates
