Marine Technician

Marine engine specialists looking to deepen their expertise with modern technology will find a strong fit here. An established marine service operation wants a Marine Technician / Outboard Motor Mechanic with real industry experience and the technical confidence to own the diagnosis, servicing and repair of marine engines.

Experienced tradespeople who can evidence their qualifications and practical capabilities will add most value in engine diagnostics, mechanical repair, marine electrical systems, commissioning and ongoing maintenance.

The work spans the workshop, mobile call-outs and on-water assignments within an experienced technical team, and ongoing technical training supports continued skills development, a solid pathway for technicians from India and elsewhere.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run computerised diagnostic tools and manufacturer-specific software to assess engines
  • Trace faults across mechanical, electrical, fuel and cooling systems on marine engines
  • Maintain and service petrol outboards along with other marine power systems
  • Undertake engine repairs, component changes and full mechanical overhauls
  • Disassemble, inspect and rebuild engines and associated parts
  • Pinpoint mechanical defects and select suitable repair solutions
  • Deliver scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance
  • Conduct tune-ups, testing and performance evaluations
  • Troubleshoot and repair marine starting, charging and electrical systems
  • Work on MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard systems where required
  • Rig outboard engines, including controls, gauges and wiring, and fit marine electronics, accessories and associated equipment
  • Complete pre-delivery inspections and commissioning
  • Run sea trials to confirm engine and system performance
  • Provide mobile servicing and repairs at customer sites when needed
  • Document work accurately in job sheets, service records and technical files, in line with manufacturer specifications and recommended repair procedures
  • Uphold safe, organised, professional workshop practice and consistently high workmanship standards

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Relevant NZQF Level 4 qualification in a marine, mechanical or related trade, or an equivalent overseas qualification
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant internal-combustion engine experience
  • Demonstrated practical experience on outboard or marine engines
  • A proven ability to diagnose engine faults and carry out effective repairs
  • Solid hands-on knowledge of engine servicing and replacement of mechanical components
  • Background in marine electrical and charging systems
  • Competence with computerised diagnostic equipment
  • Capability to interpret manufacturer service manuals and technical specifications
  • Mercury outboard experience, which is highly regarded
  • MerCruiser experience, which is highly regarded
  • Knowledge of SmartCraft and DTS systems is advantageous
  • Marine manufacturer training or certification is an advantage
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capability
  • Capacity to work independently and take ownership of assigned jobs while contributing positively within an experienced technical team
  • Firm commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship
  • Full driver's licence is preferred
  • Must meet relevant New Zealand employment and immigration requirements, with employer sponsorship available for suitably qualified overseas candidates
