Fitter Welder

Experienced fitter-welders looking to grow their trade career in New Zealand can join a growing engineering operation in Christchurch, Canterbury, where varied fabrication work builds broad, transferable expertise.

The role calls for proven workshop experience and genuine capability across welding, fitting, fabrication and assembly. Practical judgement is central: understanding each job, working accurately, making sound workshop decisions and delivering to professional engineering standards.

Projects span custom truck decks, crane installations, trailer fabrication, transport repairs and general engineering, alternating between detailed drawings and independent fabrication judgement. For tradespeople from India and other countries, it offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of engineering work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain safe work practices and a professional workshop environment
  • Comply with applicable engineering and certification requirements
  • Liaise with engineers where inspection, certification or sign-off is required
  • Manufacture and install bespoke truck decks and transport structures
  • Undertake crane fit-outs and associated fabrication
  • Execute MIG and TIG welding across mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium
  • Perform fabrication, fitting and assembly of components and structures
  • Work from engineering drawings and technical specifications, preparing, measuring, marking and cutting materials with accuracy
  • Deliver welding and fabrication to required quality standards, verifying dimensional accuracy, structural integrity and finish on completion
  • Assess fabrication and repair requirements and determine practical solutions
  • Undertake transport, truck-body and general engineering repairs
  • Manage short-notice and fast-turnaround workshop projects efficiently

Requirements & Eligibility

  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience across fitting, welding or fabrication, backed by proven hands-on workshop and fabrication experience
  • Strong MIG and TIG welding capability, with experience across mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium/alloy
  • Confidence in fitting and assembling fabricated structures and in understanding and working from technical drawings
  • Capacity to independently assess and resolve practical fabrication problems
  • Close attention to measurements, tolerances and the quality of finished work
  • A dependable approach to safety, accuracy and workmanship
  • Background in truck, transport or heavy fabrication is an advantage
  • Relevant industry certifications or welding tickets are advantageous but not mandatory; willingness to gain additional welding certifications where required
  • Capacity to provide verifiable evidence of relevant trade experience and employment history
  • Suitable overseas applicants may be considered for employer-sponsored employment, subject to the applicable New Zealand employment and visa requirements that all candidates must meet
