Field Service Technician - Agriculture

In this role, what matters is your ability to diagnose a fault, repair complex machinery and return essential equipment to work. A leading agricultural machinery service business in Waipa, Waikato is seeking a capable Field Service Technician with proven experience in diesel, heavy automotive or agricultural machinery.

You will support farmers and rural contractors across routine servicing and complex breakdowns, combining technical problem-solving with customer interaction and building a reputation as a trusted machinery specialist. Access to ongoing manufacturer and technical training keeps your skills current as equipment becomes more advanced and electronically controlled.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver field-based repairs following machinery breakdowns at customer sites, analysing technical problems systematically to determine the most appropriate solution
  • Identify mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic faults through machinery inspections and detailed diagnostics using specialist electronic and manufacturer-approved equipment
  • Perform servicing, preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs across modern tractors, harvesting equipment and specialised agricultural machinery
  • Apply safe, efficient repair methods to a high standard of workmanship and verify through testing that faults have been resolved
  • Maintain accurate service records, job reports and technical documentation
  • Present repair findings and recommendations clearly to customers, building strong relationships with farmers, contractors and machinery users
  • Manage field service assignments professionally and with minimal supervision
  • Collaborate with technicians and support staff to resolve complex technical issues
  • Strengthen your knowledge of modern agricultural machinery systems through ongoing training
  • Participate in the on-call and breakdown response roster as required

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Relevant qualification in Diesel Mechanics, Heavy Automotive Engineering or Heavy Machinery, at NZQF Level 4 or higher, or an equivalent recognised overseas qualification
  • Proven practical experience with agricultural tractors or heavy machinery, including demonstrable diagnosis and repair of mechanical systems
  • Strong fault-finding capability across hydraulic, electrical and electronic systems, supported by experience with electronic diagnostic equipment
  • Sound understanding of modern agricultural machinery and electronically controlled systems
  • Previous field service experience is highly desirable
  • Experience within an agricultural machinery dealership will be advantageous
  • Forage harvester experience is an advantage but not mandatory
  • Strong customer service and communication capability, with the ability to operate independently in customer-facing field environments
  • A professional, detail-oriented approach to workmanship and a reliable commitment to safety, documentation and service standards
  • Willingness to pursue ongoing technical training and capacity to join an on-call service roster
  • Overseas applicants must be able to evidence relevant qualifications and practical experience
