CNC Machine Operator / Machinist

Trade · Christchurch Central, Canterbury, New Zealand · Full-Time · $35/hr

For CNC Machinists aiming to build on solid, verifiable expertise, this role offers a technically demanding New Zealand engineering environment where capability is judged on what you can set up, produce, measure and solve rather than on a job title or CV.

The workload is varied: milling, turning and multi-axis machining on precision components, complex industrial parts, one-off jobs, small production runs and repair or refurbishment work. Each job calls for independent assessment, informed technical decisions and accurate output with minimal supervision.

Claimed experience is checked against credible evidence of skills and employment history. Employer sponsorship is available for candidates who meet the criteria, opening a route for experienced machinists from India and elsewhere into the New Zealand engineering sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work from engineering drawings, dimensional data and technical specifications
  • Prepare and set up CNC machinery for precision operations
  • Prove out machining programs and refine them ahead of production
  • Operate milling, turning and multi-axis CNC equipment
  • Select tooling, workholding and cutting parameters suited to each job
  • Machine components to required dimensions and tolerances
  • Measure in-process and conduct quality inspections
  • Diagnose and correct machining, tooling and setup issues, exercising independent technical judgement on unfamiliar or challenging work
  • Take on one-off, prototype and low-volume jobs
  • Produce complex and larger industrial parts
  • Perform machining for repair, refurbishment and component modification
  • Sustain accuracy and workmanship standards, monitoring processes and adjusting as required
  • Adhere to safety, quality and operational procedures in the workplace
  • Deliver assigned work efficiently within set timeframes
  • Propose practical process and method improvements and collaborate with experienced engineering and workshop colleagues

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Demonstrable hands-on experience setting up and operating CNC equipment
  • Proven professional background as a CNC Machinist
  • Exposure to CNC milling, turning and/or multi-axis machining
  • Capability to set and prove machining jobs independently
  • A strong history in precision engineering or comparable machining
  • Familiarity with one-off, small-batch or high-mix production
  • Confidence interpreting engineering drawings and specifications
  • Demonstrated command of tooling, cutting parameters and workholding, together with a strong grasp of tolerances and dimensional accuracy
  • Proven practical troubleshooting and problem-solving, with the ability to make sound technical decisions on your own
  • Experience with complex or larger industrial components is advantageous
  • Strong attention to detail and quality, with a reliable, safety-focused approach to machining
  • Ability to work independently and contribute positively within a team
  • Relevant machining trade qualification is advantageous
  • Professional experience and employment history must be capable of verification
  • Candidates must meet applicable New Zealand employment and sponsorship requirements, with employer sponsorship available for suitably qualified candidates with verified CNC expertise
