Experienced chefs ready to move into a senior position in New Zealand should look closely at this opportunity. An established hospitality business in Grey, on the West Coast, is recruiting a Sous Chef or Senior Chef de Partie for its kitchen operations across multiple venues.
The role offers exposure to varied hospitality settings, where you will take responsibility for quality, preparation and service while contributing to consistent food standards and efficient service, giving you valuable breadth for long-term career progression.
Assessment focuses on substance rather than titles: your actual kitchen experience, responsibilities, qualifications and ability to demonstrate claimed skills. Chefs from India and other countries with genuine commercial kitchen backgrounds can explore this opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
- Cook every meal to a dependable commercial standard
- Be accountable for the kitchen operations and service needs allocated to you
- Contribute to morning, midday and evening preparation and service covering breakfast, lunch and dinner
- Plan mise en place and the day's food preparation
- Portion, plate and complete each dish so it meets presentation standards
- Produce sauces, gravies, garnishes and other elements of each dish
- Cater for guests with dietary and special food needs
- Assess incoming ingredients for quality and condition prior to use
- Keep watch on stock and contribute to inventory control
- Run and adjust commercial ovens, grills and other cooking equipment
- Ensure the kitchen and its equipment stay tidy, functional, safe and in working order
- Collaborate with the broader brigade of chefs and kitchen staff
- Mentor junior team members by guiding, training and helping them in practice
- Uphold hygiene, food safety and workplace procedures
- Lend support to functions, special events and extra service demands
- Propose seasonal dishes and improvements to the menu
- Sustain quality and consistency when service is under pressure, adapt to differing needs across multiple venues and cover rostered shifts including weekends, early mornings and late evenings
Requirements & Eligibility
- NZ Register Diploma or a minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience
- A proven background in commercial kitchens
- An authentic work record that reflects the level of kitchen experience claimed
- Capacity to supply documents supporting qualifications and prior employment
- Strong practical ability in cooking and preparing food
- A history of handling busy services
- Confidence cooking across breakfast, lunch and dinner
- Sound knowledge of portion control, plating presentation and food quality
- Capacity to work quickly while upholding professional standards
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Leadership during service, including owning responsibility and supporting or training other kitchen staff
- Familiarity with food safety, hygiene and commercial kitchen practices, plus flexibility to cover weekends, early mornings, evenings and rostered shifts
- Baking or dessert experience is an advantage
